Public Comments Cosmetic dentistry, including teeth whitening and braces, are not covered
Description (Agency) A government-funded program that provides free dental care for children and youth from low-income households
Description (Service) Functions as a government-funded dental program that provides free preventive, routine, and emergency dental services for children and youth
 
Services include: 
  • Visits to a licensed dental provider, such as a dentist or a dental hygienist 
  • Regular check-ups, cleanings, fillings, x-rays, scaling, and tooth extraction 
  • Urgent or emergency dental care

Eligibility Children are eligible if they: 
  • are 17 years of age and younger 
  • live in Ontario 
  • are a member of a household with an income at or below the levels listed on the website
 
Children are automatically eligible for Healthy Smiles Ontario if they or their family receive: 
  • Ontario Works (OW) 
  • Temporary Care Assistance 
  • Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP) 
  • Assistance for Children with Severe Disabilities
 
NOTE:
  • Children are not automatically enrolled if their family receives Ontario Works and lives in a First Nations community 
  • Children and youth with other dental insurance coverage are no longer automatically excluded

  • Apply by mail, online through the website, or contact a local health unit for assistance with applying 
  • Application forms can be picked up at a local health unit or at a ServiceOntario location
