Description & Services
Public Comments The program is offered within a community school and on a modified day, with transportation arranged by the referring Board of Education
Description (Service) Provides intensive assessment and short treatment for children in grades one through eight who are experiencing severe social, emotional and/or behavioural difficulties within a school setting
 
  • The program offers intensive multi-disciplinary assessment, recommendations and treatment in collaboration with the referred child, family and referring school 
  • Addresses pertinent environmental factors for children experiencing serious behavioural difficulties within the school setting in order for children to be transitioned back into a regular school environment with improved student skills and strategies for school success  
  • Services are offered by a multidisciplinary team including Social Workers, Child and Youth Workers and Psychologists 
  • Additional services such as counselling or parenting programs may be offered or recommended, as required 
  • The length of the program is dependent on the individual needs of each child
 
This program is offered in collaboration with the Lakehead Public School Board and the Thunder Bay Catholic District School Board

Eligibility Children in grades 1 through 8 who: 
  • Function at or above the borderline range of intelligence 
  • Are eligible to attend elementary school on a full-time basis within Thunder Bay in either the Lakehead Public Schools, Thunder Bay Catholic District School Board or Conseil scolaire de district catholique des Aurores borĂ©ales  
  • Is struggling with mental health issues and has moderate to severe level of social, emotional or behavioural problems that impact their ability to function within a regular school setting 
  • Has family or caregivers who are committed to participate in the family component of the program
 
Children are NOT eligible for services if there is documented evidence of a psychological or psychiatric profile that suggests that a different service is warranted, or the child:  
  • Is functioning under the borderline range of intelligence 
  • Has a primary exceptionality other than behavioural 
  • Has family who refuses to participate in the family component of the program 
  • Has needs beyond the resources of the program
Application
  • The referring school is required to complete the Children's Centre Thunder Bay Day Treatment referral form and attach specified academic documents 
  • The referral form can be obtained by calling Intake Services at 807-343-5000 and is also available to School Board staff 
  • The referral information must be shared with the parent/guardian and they must sign the form indicated they are aware of the information and consenting to the referral, and children over the age of 12 must also consent 
  • Completed referral packages are to be forwarded by the referring school to their respective Board's Special Education Officer/Coordinator, who will then facilitate the referral to the Day Treatment Program 
  • The family will be contacted once the referral package has been received
