Description (Agency) Wesway provides personalized respite services. Wesway builds community partnerships and promotes inclusion through community development. Wesway envisions a model of respite support services to meet the needs of community with respect and dignity
Description (Service)
  • Provides a flexible range of respite care services for families of children, adults and/or seniors with a disability or chronic health condition 
  • Provides services in the home or out of the home using either staff or volunteers
 
Host Family Service 
  • Provides periods of respite by welcoming a child or adult with a disability into their home 
  • Includes the individual in their family activities for a few hours, or an occasional overnight, or a weekend
 
In-Home Service 
  • Carries out the care routines (usually performed by the family caregiver) when the needs of individuals are better met at home 
  • Assists participants in the enjoyment of various activities with a focus on their needs, interests and personal safety
 
Community Friends Service 
  • Matches individuals with a disability with volunteers who share their time every week or two to enjoy a few hours of social or recreational activities in the community
 
Respite Home Service 
  • Provides a variety of respite care for individuals in a home-like setting 
  • Engages in daily life routines with small groups of participants and enjoys social and recreational activities tailored to the participants' interests 
  • Offers weekday and weekend services
 
Family-Directed Respite Funding 
  • Administers this type of respite for families living in various communities throughout the region, also in limited circumstances within the City of Thunder Bay 
  • Develops detailed contracts with each family based on specific eligibility criteria and available resources

Boundaries Districts of Thunder Bay, Kenora, and Rainy River along the corridors of Highways 11 and 17
Eligibility
  • Eligible families are responsible for the ongoing care of a family member who lives with them 
  • Family member must have a disability or chronic health condition such as developmental disability, autism spectrum disorder, physical disability, frail condition related to aging, Alzheimer Disease or a related dementia 
  • Specific eligibility is determined by criteria relating to age, diagnosis and location of individuals
Application
  • Can be referred by family caregiver, health or community service provider 
  • Can be done by telephone
