Description (Service)
  • Supports social and economic development by investing in, and supporting an affordable, accessible and accountable child care system that benefits children, their parents and care givers, and the broader community 
  • Provides financial assistance for full and part-time subsidized child care 
  • Administers funding through service agreements with child care service providers 
  • Ensures the coordination of child care services for Ontario Works recipients to support their participation in education, employment or volunteer work 
  • Contracts with the City to manage the Child Care System including the following programs:
Child Care Subsidies 
  • Provides financial assistance for full and part-time subsidized child care for families who qualify thus supporting the employment, training and educational needs of parents
Special Needs Resourcing 
  • Assists child care service providers in preparing individual program plans and providing support to the regular caregiver of children with special needs enrolled in Day Nurseries and Home Child Care 
  • Provides funding to purchase the services of resource teachers for children in child care programs and private-home day care
Wage Enhancement Grant 
  • Improves the salaries and benefits of child care workers and makes care more affordable for parents
Family Resource Programs (Ontario Early Years) 
  • Offers a place where parents and caregivers can get answers to questions, information about services and programs that are available for young children 
  • Provides early learning and literacy programs for parents and their children through the best start hub 
  • Offers parenting programs that support parents and caregivers of young children in all aspects of early childhood development  
  • Provides information and training for new parents about pregnancy and parenting

Eligibility Ages: 10 year(s) and under 
  • Child Care Subsidies: Infants and children up to 10 years of age 
  • Special Needs Resourcing: Children with physical and/or developmental barriers enrolled in a licensed child care program 
  • Wage Enhancement program: Licensed child care providers including Home Child Care 
  • Family Resource Programs: Parents and caregivers of children up to 6 years of age
  • Child Care application can be found online or by calling Centralized Waitlist number 
  • Child Care Subsidies: Through the City of Sault Ste Marie, Social Services, Community Child Care 
  • Special Needs Resourcing: Referrals by physicians and other community agencies or professionals working with the child and family
