Eligibility | Regular Benefits: May be eligible if: *have paid premiums into the EI Account *lost employment through no fault of their own *have been without work and without pay for at least seven consecutive days in the last 52 weeks *have worked the required number of insurable hours in the last 52 weeks or since the start of their last EI claim, whichever is shorter *are ready, willing, and capable of working each day; and *are actively looking for work Will not be eligible for benefits if: *voluntarily left their employment without just cause *were dismissed for misconduct; or *are unemployed because they are directly participating in a labour dispute (strike or lockout) Maternity Benefits: *Must be biological mothers, including surrogate mothers, who cannot work because they are pregnant or have recently given birth Parental Benefits: *Must be parents who are caring for a newborn or newly adopted child *Must have paid into EI and have worked at least 600 hours in the last 52 weeks Sickness Benefits: *Must be unable to work because of sickness, injury, or quarantine *Must have paid into EI and have worked at least 600 hours in the last 52 weeks and have proof that income has been reduced by more than 40% Compassionate Care Benefits: *Must have to be absent from work to provide care or support to a gravely ill family member at risk of dying within 26 weeks *Must have paid into EI and have worked at least 600 hours in the last 52 weeks and have proof that income has been reduced by more than 40% *If family member dies while they are receiving benefits, they must inform EI immediately in order to prevent overpayment Family Caregiver Benefit: *Must be a family member (immediate or extended family) of a child under the age of 18 who is critically ill or injured *Must have paid into EI and have worked at least 600 hours in the last 52 weeks and have proof that income has been reduced by more than 40% |
