Description (Service)
  • Provides temporary financial assistance to unemployed Canadians who have lost their job through no fault of their own, while they look for work or upgrade their skills  
  • Also provides temporary financial assistance for individuals who are sick, pregnant, or caring for a newborn or adopted child, as well as those who must care for a family member who is seriously ill with a significant risk of death
 
Offers the following programs:
 
Regular Benefits: 
  • Provides financial assistance to individuals who lose their jobs through no fault of their own (such as shortage of work, seasonal layoffs, or mass layoffs) and who are available for and able to work, but can't find a job  
  • Provides a maximum of 45 weeks per claim
 
Maternity and Parental Benefits: 
  • Provides financial assistance to individuals who are pregnant, have recently given birth, are adopting a child, or are caring for a newborn  
  • Maternity benefits are a maximum of 15 weeks per claim and may begin as early as 12 weeks before the expected date of childbirth and up to 17 weeks after 
  • Parental benefits per claim can be either 35 weeks at 55% of average weekly earnings (max $543/week) or 61 weeks at 33% of average weekly earnings (max $326/week)
 
Sickness Benefits: 
  • Provides financial assistance to individuals who are unable to work because of sickness, injury, or quarantine 
  • Provides a maximum of 15 weeks per claim
 
Compassionate Care Benefits: 
  • Provides financial assistance to individuals who have to be away from work temporarily to provide care or support to a family member who is gravely ill with a significant risk of death  
  • Provides benefits to a maximum of 15 weeks per claim
 
Family Caregiver Benefit: 
  • Provides financial assistance to eligible family members (immediate or extended family) who take leave from work to provide care or support to their critically ill or injured child  
  • Provides benefits to a maximum of 35 weeks per claim

Eligibility Regular Benefits:  
May be eligible if:  
*have paid premiums into the EI Account  
*lost employment through no fault of their own  
*have been without work and without pay for at least seven consecutive days in the last 52 weeks  
*have worked the required number of insurable hours in the last 52 weeks or since the start of their last EI claim, whichever is shorter  
*are ready, willing, and capable of working each day; and  
*are actively looking for work  
 
Will not be eligible for benefits if:  
*voluntarily left their employment without just cause  
*were dismissed for misconduct; or  
*are unemployed because they are directly participating in a labour dispute (strike or lockout)  
 
Maternity Benefits:  
*Must be biological mothers, including surrogate mothers, who cannot work because they are pregnant or have recently given birth  
 
Parental Benefits:  
*Must be parents who are caring for a newborn or newly adopted child  
*Must have paid into EI and have worked at least 600 hours in the last 52 weeks  
 
Sickness Benefits:  
*Must be unable to work because of sickness, injury, or quarantine  
*Must have paid into EI and have worked at least 600 hours in the last 52 weeks and have proof that income has been reduced by more than 40%  
 
Compassionate Care Benefits:  
*Must have to be absent from work to provide care or support to a gravely ill family member at risk of dying within 26 weeks  
*Must have paid into EI and have worked at least 600 hours in the last 52 weeks and have proof that income has been reduced by more than 40%  
*If family member dies while they are receiving benefits, they must inform EI immediately in order to prevent overpayment  
 
Family Caregiver Benefit:  
*Must be a family member (immediate or extended family) of a child under the age of 18 who is critically ill or injured  
*Must have paid into EI and have worked at least 600 hours in the last 52 weeks and have proof that income has been reduced by more than 40%
Application Regular Benefits:

Will need the following information:  
  • Social Insurance Number  
  • mother's maiden name  
  • mailing and residential addresses, including the postal codes  
  • complete banking information to apply for direct deposit, including the financial institution name, the bank branch number, and account number  
  • the names, addresses, dates of employment, and reason for separation for all employers for the last 52 weeks  
  • a detailed version of the facts, if quit or have been dismissed from any job in the last 52 weeks  
  • the dates (Sunday to Saturday) of any weeks in the last 52 weeks when they did not work or receive any earnings and the reason(s) why
 
Maternity and Parental Benefits: 
  • Same process as regular benefits but also must provide the expected or actual date of birth for maternity benefits and the date of birth of newborn or full adoption information and the SIN of the other parent if planning to share the benefits
 
Sickness Benefits: 
  • Same process as regular benefits, but also need to obtain a medical certificate signed by doctor or approved medical practitioner
 
Compassionate Care Benefits: 
Same process as regular benefits, but need to submit the following forms at the same time:  
  • Form INS5216A, Authorization to Release a Medical Certificate, which must be completed and signed by the gravely ill person or their legal representative; and  
  • Form INS5216B, Medical Certificate for Employment Insurance Compassionate Care Benefits, which must be completed and signed by the medical doctor or nurse practitioner of the gravely ill person to confirm their significant risk of death within 26 weeks
 
Family Caregiver Benefit: 
Same process as regular benefits, but need to submit the following forms at the same time:  
  • Form INS5242A, Authorization to Release a Medical Certificate for Employment Insurance Family Caregiver Benefits, which must be completed and signed by the claimant; and  
  • Form INS5242B, Medical Certificate for Employment Insurance Family Caregiver Benefits, which must be completed and signed by the medical doctor or nurse practitioner of the critically ill or injured child
