Description (Service)
  • Responsible for stimulating local economy and developing economic initiatives and opportunities for the community 
  • Provides services through guidance and partnership with Waubetek Business Development Corporation (WBDC)  
  • Provides information, training and educational workshops to enhance employability skills  
  • Posts employment opportunities in Band office  
  • Works to access funding for Band-owned business ventures  
  • Provides coaching in areas such as business plan development and assistance in obtaining financial support for people wanting to start own business 
  • Maintains updated statistics regarding population trends, employment, skills and the community profile
 
Economic initiatives and on-going projects for Sheshegwaning First Nation include but are not limited to: 
  • A 99% interest in Odawa Stone Limited Partnership (Odawa Stone), a company which is engaged in development and operation of a stone quarry 
  • Partnership in the 60MW McLean's Mountain Wind Project with Mnidoo Mnising Power, a company formed by the United Chiefs and Councils of Mnidoo Mnising First Nations and Northland Power 
  • Part ownership of the Manitoulin Island Hotel & Conference Centre with five other First Nations and the Great Spirit Circle Trail (GSCT), a Manitoulin-based business that offers experiential tourism packages to people who want to experience First Nations culture 
  • Consultations with Hudson Management for a proposed windmill tower project in Vidal Bay at the NW end of Manitoulin Island 
  • Plans to possibly develop a hiking trail overlooking the North Channel 
  • Development of an economic strategic plan; provincial funding announced Feb 2017 from the Aboriginal Community Capital Grants Program (ACCGP) and the Aboriginal Economic Development Fund (AEDF) for this project
