Description (Service) Assists Aboriginal offenders at the sentencing stage of their criminal matter 
  • Provides a written Gladue report to the Court about the life circumstances of the offender and of the options available to the Court in sentencing 
  • Gathers information through interviews with offender, family members, community members who know the client and community representatives 
  • Uses the report to determine the factors which contributed to the involvement in the criminal offence  
  • Strives to prevent future criminal activity and ultimately to reduce the over-representation of Aboriginal offenders in the prison system
 
Systemic factors outlined in the Gladue report can include but not limited to: 
  • Abuse (emotional, physical, sexual and verbal) 
  • Addictions 
  • Child welfare involvement 
  • Domestic violence 
  • Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) 
  • Intergenerational effects of residential school 
  • Lack of education 
  • Mental health issues

Eligibility
  • Youth Program: youth 12-17 years of age 
  • Adult Program: adults 18 years of age and over 
  • Must belong to one of the member First Nations within the United Chiefs & Councils of Mnidoo Mnising Territory or Wikwemikong First Nation either on/off-reserve and 
  • Be charged with a criminal offence
