Description (Service) Assists residents to obtain and maintain safe and affordable housing 
 
Programs offered include:
 
Rent Geared to Income (RGI) 
  • Rent amounts are determined by calculating 30% of a household's gross monthly income 
  • Tenants pay a calculated rent amount to the landlord while ADSAB subsidizes the difference of the cost to the landlord 
  • Subsidized housing is offered by 3 types of housing providers:
     
    Non-Profit Housing 
    • Units are owned and managed by a community based organization
     
    Public Housing 
    • Units are owned and operated by the Algoma District Administration Board
     
    Rent Supplement Housing 
    • Units are owned and managed by private market landlords
 
Direct Shelter Subsidy 
  • Offers eligible applicants a Rent-Geared-to-Income subsidy while living in privately owned buildings 
  • ADSAB pays a shelter subsidy amount directly to the landlord while the tenant is responsible to pay the remaining rent amount to the landlord 
  • Availability of government funds for this program is limited
 
Ontario Renovates 
  • Provides financial assistance for low to moderate income households that need help with the cost of repairs to their home to bring it up to acceptable standard by improving the energy efficiency of the home or the accessibility of the home through modifications and adaptations
 
Community Homelessness Prevention Initiative 
  • Assists individuals and families who are homeless or at risk of homelessness in securing shelter or maintaining their current housing 
  • Offers assistance with the following: 
    • Rental arrears 
    • Energy arrears 
    • Rent or utility deposit in order to establish new housing 
    • Heating expenses, including wood, propane, oil, oil tank replacement, furnace repairs, etc 
    • Other unmet expenses or needs that could directly or indirectly jeopardize their health and welfare and/or housing

    Eligibility Ages: 16 year(s) and up 
     
    Rent Geared to Income Housing and Direct Shelter Subsidy 
    • Individuals and families with low to moderate incomes
     
    Ontario Renovates 
    • Must own a home in the Algoma District that is your sole and principal residence 
    • Must be a Canadian citizen, Landed Immigrant or have Refugee Claimant status 
    • Must have property taxes paid up to date 
    • Must have mortgages paid up to date 
    • Must have property insured to its full value 
    • Must be within income and house value limits
     
    Community Homelessness Prevention Initiative 
    • Must have income below the Low Income Cut Off (LICO) as established by ADSAB, or 
    • Must be a recipient or Ontario Works or the Ontario Disability Support Program
    Application Applications are available at your local ADSAB office or on the ADSAB website; print, sign and return by fax, mail or in person
     
    Rent Geared to Income  
    • The applicant will be contacted once a unit is available 
    • An RGI Interview will be scheduled if the applicant accepts the available unit offer, and a letter will be sent stating the date, time and location of the RGI Interview, along with a list of required documentation
     
    Direct Shelter Subsidy  
    • A letter will be sent confirming the receipt of the application once received 
    • If deemed eligible, the applicant will be placed on the DSS Wait List for funding 
    • The applicant will be contacted once subsidy funds become available in order to schedule an in-person interview
     
    Ontario Renovates 
    • Complete, sign and return application to the nearest ADSAB office in person, by mail or fax along with copies of the required documents
     
    Community Homelessness Prevention Initiative 
    • After receiving the completed application along with all required documents, the applicant will be contacted 
    • Must first access the Low-Income Energy Assistance Program (LEAP) for help with any Hydro arrears before this program can assist
